Trend Report: Invitation Wording

Calligraphy-Floral-Wedding-Invitations-LaHappy

What most couples don’t realize about their wedding invitations is that its not the colours or the fonts that are important. It really is all about the wording. Your wedding invitation wording sets the tone for your guests. Having a casual wedding? Your invitation probably shouldn’t start with ‘The honour of your presence is requested…’ And a formal invitation should not show the wedding date as ‘September 26, 2014′. These are just small cues that let your guest know what to expect, even how to dress for the occasion.

Your wording should always include details like the date and time of the ceremony. Make sure you include the location information as well as whether it will be an indoor or outdoor event (this can be listed on a separate information card or on your wedding website). Will dinner be included in the reception or are you just serving hor d’oeuvres? Be sure to cover the Who, What, Where, and When.

After you have inserted those details, try to make the wording personal to you and your fiance. Don’t be afraid to have some fun with it if your wedding is going to be more casual. Even if you are having a formal wedding, insert some fun lines on your response card. Your guests will appreciate the extra effort.

Wedding Invitation of the Week

Carmel-Valley-wedding-1

I want to start this post with an answer to a question that some brides and grooms have brought up regarding wedding invitations. Most recently, I saw the question come up in my Facebook news feed:

If I am having a small wedding (75ish people
from within the city – just family) can I forego invitations? I see these people at least twice a week! I’m trying to cut costs, and I think word-of-mouth, or a FB page, might be easier, and definitely cheaper!

As an invitation designer, this offends me. But everyone is entitled to make their own choices and of course, your budget will always dictate what you can and cannot do. Please don’t skip the invitation though. This is the first piece of the wedding that your guests get to see. It sets the tone for the entire day! I always recommend at least printing a set for your closest family and friends. Remember, just because you don’t care about the invitation to your own wedding, doesn’t mean your grandma or best friend won’t appreciate it. And trust me, e-vites are not trendy.

I’m going to keep this wedding invitation of the week short and sweet!

I love intricate printing on wedding invitations. Foil stamping, laser cutting, die-cutting, letterpress, sign me up! The problem is that these can be expensive because you have to pay for each colour (or plate) that you are printing.

I love this invitation designed by Pitbulls and Posies for Jacqueline and Nate’s Carmel Valley wedding because they really thought about the design and even though the patterns are intricate, its still just one plate that is printed. And if you only have the budget for one plate, you may as well use a gold foil!

The invitation and reply card design work perfectly together with just the right balance of ornate illustrations and modern typefaces.

Top Wedding Links

Untitled-1 I love scouring the web for the latest trends in wedding invitations. But it can be very overwhelming (I’m looking at you, Pinterest ). So I am bringing you my top links for wedding invitations, trends, DIY tips, photos, etc. In this brand new blog feature. Enjoy!

  3. All Women Stalk: 7 Things to do After Getting Engaged
There are some things that should definitely make the list of the first things to do after getting engaged. 4. Storyboard Wedding: A Better Way to do Return Addresses on Wedding Invitations
Naturally I see my fair share of wedding invitations & accompanying that, how they are presented as a whole package. I think that a lot of couples don’t really see a high level of importance when it comes to the invitation phase of their planning and as such tend to take a more ‘just get them in the mail’ mentality. While thats all well and good, it goes completely against something I truly believe in which is that your invitations set the tone for what your wedding will be like, as well as relate directly to how the day will look. 5. Oh So Beautiful Paper: How to Back Invitations with Patterened Paper
Patterned invitation backers can break the budget for many couples because there is so much time and labor involved. We always like to encourage people to take matters into their own hands – and today we’ll show you exactly how to do that! Click here to read

WEDmonton Event Review

A few weeks ago, an email from ISES Edmonton popped up in my inbox with the title WEDmonton - Let’s Chat, Design & Inspire Each Other! So obviously, I had to find out more. Wedmonton was created for wedding industry professionals to meet up  before the busy wedding season begins. I am not a member of ISES Edmonton but I would consider joining in the future if these are the types of events that they are bringing to the event/wedding industry in Edmonton.

This was not your typical business card in-hand, fake banter type of mixer. Every person in attendance has a real passion for what they do and I am constantly in awe of the work that I see from them. I loved that we had an opportunity to chat about our industry openly (more on that later), because it really is about growing together and elevating each other.

I have to say a huge thank you to the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald for providing the event space – if you haven’t seen the Wedgwood Room before, it is so unique! And the delicious dinner (OMG a poutine bar, are you kidding me) and desserts. And to Jennifer Bergman and Lars Erickson for being great hosts for the evening.

Now let’s get to the event. First, there was a tabletop design competition. Six tables were beautifully decorated and we had to choose just 3 that we loved the most. They were all so well done – who knew you could print on velvet! After the votes were tallied, it was Elegant Touches that took home the prize. They were my top pick as well!

The fun didn’t stop there! The main event was a speaker panel followed by round table discussions. First up was Haley of Shandro Photo . She spoke about the business of weddings – basically do work, get paid. It’s so important to remember that we provide a service and even though it is super fun and we get to be creative, it’s still our source of income. Price accordingly.

IMG_3637 Emma Fortier from Special Event Rentals was up next and she talked to us about inspiration and how to work with your vendors to come up with unique design solutions. She really inspired me when she said spend the most time on what you’re good at . I love that! I want to provide my clients with the best service possible and sometimes that means outsourcing smaller or less creative tasks so that my time is used efficiently.

Last but not least, Caitlin McElhone of CM Events gave us a reality check on the risks and liability of being in the wedding industry. If you are considering hiring a planner, or any vendor for that matter, ask to review their contract. It should cover both you and them in case anything goes wrong. Seriously, any vendor without a formal contract is not legit.

It was such a great night of delicious food, great conversation, and new friends. Can’t wait for the next one! Search #WEDmonton on Twitter or Instagram for more attendee comments and photos.
